The Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center Review

May 24, 2014 by Mama Carmody 4 Comments

The Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center Review

Disclaimer: I was given free admission to the Indianapolis Zoo and the Orangutan Center, for 3 guests and myself, however I was not influenced by the offer. All opinions and insights are my own.

The Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center is receiving nationwide media attention and is being called one of the most significant zoo exhibits anywhere in the world. The zoo’s website says, “An epic adventure awaits inside this incredible new exhibit, which offers an unparalleled experience for both guests and orangutans.” After our visit today, I must say, I agree.

In Preparation

I invited my friend and her two little boys (ages 4 ½ and 2 ½) to go with me. We did a couple of things in preparation for our trip. First of all, we visited the zoo’s special site called Azy and Friends. We were able to learn about each of the orangutans that reside in the Center. We learned their ages, where they lived before they came to Indianapolis, what their favorite foods are and a little about their personalities. You will find a fun little quiz on the site that will match you up with one of the orangutans. We took the quiz and then I made each of us a special t-shirt with the picture of our orangutan on it.

I picked up some books, from the library. I gave Ashley one titled, “Orangutan (A Day in the Life: Rain Forest Animals)” by Anita Ganeri. She said the boys enjoyed it so much that she read it to them three different times. Now they have an idea of what an orangutan is and are ready for their trip to the zoo.

The Center is a beautiful structure that appeals to the orangutans and humans as well. There are many areas for the orangutans to explore and interact with visitors…and interact, they do! Look at the smiles I got from this one.

When we arrived Rocky was exploring the Myrta Pulliam Hutan Trail. It is designed to represent the orangutans’ “highway” through the forest. The trail is a series of cables and bridges that allow the orangutans to travel 40 feet above the guests.

On his way back down Rocky enjoyed stopping and watching us as much as we enjoyed watching him.

Once inside the Center, we were able to look through large windows into the R.B. Annis Atrium. The orangutans can stay away from the windows to relax and hang out together or they can come up to the windows and interact with the visitors. They are so close you feel like you could just reach out and touch them. (And in some camera shots it looks like you just did.)

From the Community Plaza, you can view the front of the building. The front  is covered with large glass windows, from which you have another angle to view the orangutans.  We stood out there for a long time while the boys interacted with one of the orangutans.

One aspect of the Center, that we didn’t get to experience, is the Skyline. The Skyline is an aerial ride that travels around the outer edge of the exhibit. Visitors get an excellent view of the Hutan Trail as well as a gorgeous view of downtown. I’m looking forward to experiencing this.

I can all ready tell that this is going to be one of my favorite exhibits at the zoo. I have a feeling that it’s going to be popular with many people. If you are a member, you have the opportunity of beating the crowds by accessing the Center an hour before the zoo opens. This exclusive benefit is available on Saturdays and Sundays. from May 24-Sept. 1, at 8:00 a.m.. Who knows, maybe I will see you there.

Studio Movie Grill Review

November 4, 2013 by Mama Carmody 7 Comments

Studio Movie Grill Review

Disclaimer: I was given 4 tickets to attend the movie of my choice, at the Studio Movie Grill, as well as 8 tickets to use in a give-away. However, I was not influenced by the promotional materials. All opinions and insights are my own. (Update 11/08/13, Congratulation to Kelly Bradbury and Karey for each winning a set of 4 tickets.)

Studio Movie Grill
Studio Movie Grill

The Studio Movie Grill is definitely a new way to experience the movies. The Studio Movie Grill offers original first-run movies coupled with in-theater dining. It is located just off of Michigan Road on 86th Street, at 3535 West 86th Street.

When I was contacted by the Studio Movie Grill about doing a review I first asked them if they showed many children’s movies, since my audience is mostly family oriented. They informed me that they show many first-run children and family movies. In addition, they also have a special “Kids Toons” series every weekend morning and tickets are only $2 each. Also, one Saturday each month SMG hosts the “Special Needs Screening”; a special presentation of a current release with free tickets for children with special needs and their siblings, and only $6 for adults.

I must be honest and say, my first impressions with the Studio Movie Grill were not favorable. I did not have much success in getting information on the movie we wanted to go see. First I went to their website, www.studiomoviegrill.com, and looked over the movies that were available. I watched several trailers and settled on a child friendly movie (since I am a kid at heart), Free Birds (3D). I clicked on the time we wanted to go see and received a message that they had just sold out for that viewing so I chose a different time and got the same message. After several attempts, I finally realized it was a glitch in the way their website behaved and was able to find a time that was available (a time that had previously said wasn’t available). As I looked at my options to continue the order I wasn’t sure how to show that I all ready had tickets. At this point I decided to read the information on my ticket. (I have a bit of a problem with reading instructions until after I’m having difficulties) It states on the pass that it can’t be used for online sales so I tried to call the theater…more frustrations. Although there was an option to speak to someone in the box office I was sent to a voicemail box. I didn’t want to leave a message, I wanted to know if there were seats available for the showing I was interested in. I was not impressed that I couldn’t get hold of an actual person to answer my questions. I decided that since the passes couldn’t be used online there must be seats available even if you don’t have a reservation so we headed out.

I was pleasantly surprised when we entered The Studio Movie Grill. It resembles an upscale club. You won’t find a concession stand or a heavy smell of popcorn and old butter. There is a very modern look to the lobby. To the left of the entrance is a lounge/bar area for the grown-ups. It sets behind a high partial wall so it is not the center of attention. Because of the way it is positioned it makes a cozy place for grown-ups to hang out but if you are bringing the family in for a movie it will hardly be noticed.

Once you purchase your tickets they ask you to take a look at a small computer-sized screen, that is set in the counter in front of you, and choose which of the available seats you want to sit in. They then print out and hand you the tickets with your row and seat number on them. There were two girls at the ticket check stand. One checked our tickets and the other took us to our seats. The rows are wide so it’s easy to get in and out (and easy for the servers to get to you).

wide aisles

The seats are large and comfortable with trays that swivel so you can get in and out of your seat.

Studio Movie Grill - Large comfortable seats
Studio Movie Grill – Large comfortable seats

Shortly after we were seated a server came by with menus. On each tray is a button that you push to let your server know you are ready to order.

We got lost trying to find the theater so we were running a little late but I highly recommend that you follow their suggestion and arrive at least 20 minutes early. They suggest you do this so you can order your food well before the movie starts. It didn’t take them long to bring our food to us but because it was so close to time for the movie to start, when we ordered, it didn’t arrive until after the movie began. The problem with that was that it was so dark we couldn’t see what we were doing. The theater has no problem with bringing food to you whenever you want it. Their site states: “Order as much and as often as you like throughout the show.”

The food was delicious. My favorite was the appetizer; chicken nachos. We will definitely be ordering that again. My husband and I both ordered burgers. The burgers were thick and tender. We both had sweet potato fries as our sides. They were a little cold but well seasoned. They have a wide variety of choices on their menu. We could have chosen a turkey or black bean burger rather than the beef. They boast an evolving menu of over 100 items ranging from delicious appetizers, healthy choices, entrée salads, gourmet pizzas, a kids menu and desserts. Their prices are reasonable. I would say they are along the same lines as Chili’s or Applebee’s. You don’t have to order food at all or you can go with the traditional popcorn and soda.

From what I researched Studio Movie Grill’s ticket prices are the same as other theaters. They are not charging you extra for the nicer theater and the wonderful food service.

Although I had a rough start, in trying to get information from their website and box office, it turned out to be a wonderful evening. I would highly recommend the Studio Movie Grill for a unique family activity or possibly a special date night for a parent and child. It would also make a great date night for mom and dad. They deserve and need a special night every once in a while. I know we will be returning. Maybe we will see you there.

Review – Hoosier Outdoor Experience at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park

September 30, 2013 by Mama Carmody 14 Comments

Hoosier Outdoor Experience at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park, Review

Saturday and Sunday, September 20 & 21, was the 5th Hoosier Outdoor Experience at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park. This was my first year to attend and I really regret that I hadn’t gone before. Of course, I hadn’t heard of it before but I had such a blast that I wish I HAD known and gone before.

This is such a big event (and free, I might add) that you can’t drive into the park on these two days. You park just a little distance from the State Park and they shuttle you in on buses. When I saw the line waiting on the buses I thought we would be there forever but that wasn’t the case. Four buses pulled up, they counted us off and directed us to the one we were to board and we were on our way. I don’t believe we waited in line anymore than 10 minutes. Here is a picture of where we started at:

The buses dropped us off at the Welcome area. From the Welcome area we could walk to many activities. We could also catch shuttles that would take us to other areas of the park where activities were happening.

We started with the activities around the Welcome area. There were 25 different activities in this area. We didn’t get to all of them but I will share with you the ones that we did participate in.

We headed to the Teepee first. It was huge. I love anything that has to do with Native American Indians.

Love to Laugh and Learn: Teepee at Hoosier Outdoor Experience
Love to Laugh and Learn: Teepee at Hoosier Outdoor Experience

On our way to the Teepee we stopped by this huge piece of machinery to find out what it was. We found out it was a piece of equipment to dig wells. At this spot, I learned a new word, along with the 5 year old that was with us. The word was aquifer. According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, an aquifer is, “a layer of rock or sand that can absorb and hold water”. Children were able to build their own aquifers with wells at this station. They used a straw as the well and then placed different types of rock and soils around the well. Water was then poured over the soil. Finally a “pump” was placed in the well. The pump was a pump from a bottle of hand soap. The children were then able to pump the water from the well. I found it quite fascinating.

We stopped and watched several children and adults playing games at the Outdoor Craft and Game Exhibit but we didn’t participate. We then went to the Girl Scout Outdoor Fun area where we played with bubbles…even the adults (me included) got our hands soapy.

The 5 year old spotted the the sledding hill. There were children running up the hill and either running back down or rolling down. He said he had never rolled down a hill before so he and his dad went to roll down the hill while we went to get all of us some food. The food was delicious and at surprisingly reasonable prices. My husband got 2 hot dogs and a bag of chips for $4 and I got an ear of roasted corn for $3 (2 for $5).

At this point we headed over to the Shuttle to ride to another section but when we got over there we found a tractor and a wagon taking people on a hayride. We climbed on and got a tour of the west end of the park. It was relaxing and fun.

Love to Laugh and Learn: Hayride at Hoosier Outdoor Experience
Love to Laugh and Learn: Hayride at Hoosier Outdoor Experience

After the hayride we climbed onto the Green Shuttle so we could head over to the NRA Shooting Sports Spectrum. Luckily for us, our shuttle driver got a little confused and missed our turn. The reason I say “luckily” is because we ended up running out of time and weren’t able to go to the activities in the “Red” section. At least we were able to get a glance of the activities in that area when we rode through. There were 19 different activities spread out over the “Red” area. Naming just a few of the activities; there was basic fishing, kayaking and critter chat.

Once our driver was back on track, we headed to the “Green” section and were finally dropped off at the NRA Shooting Sports Spectrum. In this area we had the opportunity to participate in archery, air rifle, shotgun and crossbow. Since the lines were a little long we only took the time for the archery. Next year I’m going to find time to try all of them.

We climbed back on the Green Shuttle to go a little further down the road. We found 8 more activities in this area. The activities in this area were very popular and the lines were very long. We wanted to do the off-road rides but the wait was 45 minutes so we decided against that. We also wanted to try the horseback riding but you had to be over 8 years old and we had a 5 year old with us so that was out of the question. We thought we would bring the 5 year old back for the pony rides (the lines weren’t nearly as long for them) but we ran out of time.

The last activity we participated in was the Tiny Tots Mini-Bikes. Although our little guy doesn’t usually like to wait in lines when he saw he was going to be able to ride a motorized bike he decided he could wait. We ended up waiting for about an hour and a half but according to the expression on his face it was worth it. After the ride, he said he was glad we waited. I was glad too when I saw how much he enjoyed it. They did a wonderful job of instructing and supervising the young riders. There was an adult assigned to each rider. They gave the rider clear directions and practice before they were turned loose to drive around the track. It was fun to watch.

After the ride on the Mini-Bikes we caught the shuttle and headed back to the Welcome area where we caught the bus to take us back to our car.

I must say that I absolutely love and recommend the Hoosier Outdoor Experience. I plan to attend again next year. I may even go on both Saturday and Sunday to make sure I get to experience everything they have to offer.

Review – BounceU of Fishers, Indiana

June 2, 2013 by Mama Carmody 9 Comments

BounceU
BounceU

I was so excited when I received an invitation from Travis Titus, the General Manager of BounceU of Fishers, to come and do a review of the business. I have a 3 ½ year old great-niece and two 2 year old great-nephews (well, one of them is almost 2). In my preconceived idea of what this place would be like, I thought, “What kid doesn’t love bouncy castles, this will be so much fun for my little ones.” So with the youngest one in tow (the one that isn’t quite 2 years old), my husband and I headed out to see what was happening at BounceU and enjoy some time with our great-nephew.

Now let me ask you to please pay close attention to what I’m about to share with you (closer attention than I paid to the information that was available to me). In the original email that was sent to me it stated that “children must be at least 34” tall and able to walk on their own to play on the inflatables.” I thought to myself, “Jeremiah has been walking for a year now so he must be at least 34” tall.” The night before I was scheduled to go I decided I should go to the BounceU website and read what it has to say about the place (I really should have done that sooner). On their website under FAQs, the first question is “Is there an age limit?” And guess what…there is an answer right below the question which states, “BounceU is suitable for ages 2 to adult…” Jeremiah won’t be 2 until July so I probably should have checked for this information sooner. Oh well, plans had been made so my husband and I picked up Jeremiah and headed off for our adventure.

We were welcomed by a brightly decorated and inviting storefront.

BounceU
BounceU

The inside lobby was just as brightly decorated and fun. We were warmly greeted by Travis and he began to show us around. The first thing you must do upon entering is head to the counter to fill out any necessary paperwork and pay your admission fees. Anyone under the age of 18 must submit a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. There is a link on their webpage so you can have the paperwork filled out before you arrive which will save you some time and get to the bouncing quicker.

Our next stop was at some benches where you sit and watch a short safety video which covers, in a little more detail, their important rules.

BounceU Rules
BounceU Rules

We were then escorted into one of their two bounce rooms. We first had to take our shoes off and put them in a little cubby. Then make sure that everyone has socks on. We were then shown the area they have for little ones under 2 years old. There wasn’t a lot there but Jeremiah enjoyed climbing and sliding down the foam structure.

Under 2 Area Collage
They brought out some bouncy rubber donkeys that he really enjoyed too. He insisted that Uncle Pat get on one along with him.

Riding the Donkey
Riding the Donkey

Jeremiah especially enjoyed anything that had balls. There was a “batting cage” that had a ball floating on a stream of air. You are supposed to hit the ball and try to get it to go into one of the bases (holes) in the backdrop. Jeremiah didn’t understand that part of it but he enjoyed placing the ball over the stream of air and knocking it off. He spent quite a while doing that one.

Playing Ball
Playing Ball

There was another activity that involved balls. There are five different balls floating on streams of air. You are supposed to throw rubber balls at the floating balls to knock them off. It was a little harder for Jeremiah because he is so little but he still enjoyed picking the balls up and throwing them. There was a 5 year old girl there that did a great job of knocking the balls off the streams of air. I was really impressed with her arm and her aim.

There are a couple of large open area jumping inflatables. One was a boxing ring with over-sized boxing gloves…

……the other one had a basketball hoop in it and we were told that they have over-sized inflatable lances so the kids could pretend they are jousting. Both of these areas are great for just jumping around in too, although we couldn’t get Jeremiah to go near either of them.

There was only one other family at BounceU at the same time we were; a mother and two little girls. The girls were 5 years old and 2 years old (turning 3 in August). This was also their first time at BounceU and they were having a blast. Here they are in one of the inflatables that had things to climb and a slide.

There was a big climbing wall, that you could scale and grab a flag. The 5 year old was quite proud of her accomplishment.

There was also a fun obstacle course that had two identical courses so you could challenge a friend to a race. This one looked like a lot of fun to me but of course, Jeremiah wouldn’t have anything to do with it. I’m afraid he could have beat me through the obstacle course, anyway.

Obstacle Course

There was one other piece of equipment that Jeremiah was interested in. It was a huge two-story slide. At first all he wanted to do was play on the slope at the entrance.

Base of Slide
Base of Slide

He ventured part way up the “ladder” a couple of times but would turn around and come back down before he got very far. Finally, one of the staff members was able to get him to climb all the way to the top of the slide. By the way, the staff is absolutely wonderful with the kids. They were there to help out, encourage and answer any questions. The staff member asked Jeremiah if he wanted her to slide down with him. She said that he just said, “No, no,” and went down by himself. After he made it down the first time, he loved it so much he went several more times.

Big Slide
Big Slide

Here is one of my favorite things about BounceU, it is for ages 2 and up!….2 and UP! When I first got my invitation I thought that BounceU would just be for little kids…but it’s not…its for 2 and UP. I’m part of the “UP”…way “UP”. This is great to know for two reasons. One, as a mother or grandmother, it’s nice to know that if your child gets “stuck” or scared you can easily retrieve them. Unlike the “tube/tunnel” play places they had when my children were small. The second reason this is great is because I can play too!

And I wasn’t the only grown-up having fun.

Grown-up Fun
Grown-up Fun

Besides BounceU being a great place to take your children for some exercise and playtime, it’s a wonderful place for a birthday party. It’s probably one of the BEST places I have ever heard of for a birthday party.

Birthday Room
Birthday Room

When you schedule a birthday party at BounceU, your party will be the only group in the bounce room. There are two bounce rooms and your party will spend part of the time in one room and then be moved to the next room. After your time is up in the bounce rooms your group will be taken to one of the two party rooms. The staff will have everything ready to go when you arrive at the party room. If you have ordered food, the staff will have it ready to serve up. Although you can’t bring in your own food, you can bring in a cake or order it through BounceU. The staff will cut and serve the food. They will even have the presents you brought arranged and ready for the birthday child. You just get to sit back and enjoy.

There is a special throne for the birthday boy/girl to sit in and open presents.

Birthday Throne
Birthday Throne

And get this!…the staff will keep a list of the presents and who gave them so you can send thank you notes later if you like. It sounds like they have thought of everything. They even have big bins on wheels so that when the party is over, they will put all the presents in the bins and roll them to your car and help you load them up. You don’t even have to worry about clean up, just party and leave. Isn’t that the coolest?! Another great bit of information is that adult chaperones are free to birthday parties as long as the total of kids plus adults is less than 50.

So to sum up our adventures at BounceU of Fishers:

1) It really isn’t for children under 2 years old, but if you have to bring a little one with you, there are a few things that they will enjoy.
2) Since adults can also enjoy the inflatables it’s a great place for a family outing.
3) Adults get in free with a paying child ages 2- 17 years old.
4) It is the best place I know of to throw a birthday party.
5) Be sure to check their schedule for Open Bounce times. Check their schedule often because Open Bounce times get added on weekends when they don’t have a lot of birthday parties scheduled.
6) The staff is wonderful with the kids which is very important to any parent.
7) At the time we attended there was just one other family so we had the whole place to ourselves, so go by and spend some time in this place now before the word gets out and it’s packed to the rafters.

Be sure to check the BounceU website for open times.

Review: Chase 500 Festival Kids’ Day

May 13, 2013 by Mama Carmody 6 Comments

Review of Chase 500 Festival Kids' Day 05-11-13
Review of Chase 500 Festival Kids’ Day 05-11-13

Monument Circle was shut down to traffic for the day so kids and their families could enjoy some time together in celebration of the 500 Festival.  It was overcast and cool but that didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of the children and families that I saw. I am pleased to say that everything at the Chase 500 Festival Kids’ Day really was free (except for food and drinks).

There were several Bounce Houses to choose from.

There was even a special Bounce House for young ones.

To encourage good health and physical activity Chase sponsored a Rookie Run. The kids looked like they had as much fun waiting on the starting line and dancing to the music, with the 500 Festival Princesses, as they did running the race.

The Ferris Wheel was free, just like everything else, and I’m sure that the view would have been fantastic from the top but the line was so long I decided to pass it up.

There were several booths with crafts and activities. There was a 500 Festival Princess Craft Zone as well as a 500 Festival Racer’s Craft Zone.

K-LOVE, which is my favorite Christian radio station, was doing face painting…

….and the Indianapolis Zoo had a giant game of Conservation Zynga going on.

One of the activities I enjoyed watching was the kids’ race track. If you were big enough to pedal, then there was a vehicle for you. Everyone got a prize when they finished.

The other activity I enjoyed watching was the rock wall climbing. It was an activity that both boys and girls were having a great time doing.

As I said before, you did have to pay for food and drinks. I love festival corn dogs but I never found the booth that was selling them. I also love shaved-ice, sno-cone type treats and saw several of them but this was my favorite for two reasons; one reason was that it was a cute kid-themed stand and the other was because you got to put your own flavorings on the ice.

Several performances were happening on the steps of the monument but I didn’t get any pictures. I was too short to get a good shot. I enjoyed watching the dancers and there was a funny magician too. The big performance of the day was the Kidz Bop group but I missed them.

Although I didn’t have a child with me so I didn’t get to experience the day through them, from what I observed, everyone was having a great time. There were plenty of activities for all ages and it really was free. I would definitely recommend that you not miss this event next year.

As I was leaving the festival, I turned to get one more shot of the Monument since the sun had finally come out. Just as I got ready to take the shot a red balloon, that someone lost, floated past the Monument. It was my favorite picture of the day and a fitting way to say farewell.
